*** MORSEL EXTRAS***
Re: Sojourners
"Day by day you groan over the ever-increasing number of Christians.
Your constant cry is that your state is beset by us, that Christians
are everywhere." --Tertullian to the 3rd Century pagans
But while they dwell in Greek or barbarian cities according as each
man's lot has been cast, and follow the customs of the land in clothing
and food, and other matters of daily life, yet the conditon of
citizenship which they exhibit is wonderful, and admittedly strange.
They live in countries of their own, but simply as sojourners...
enduring the lot of foreigners... They exist in the flesh, but they
live not after the flesh. They spend their existence upon earth, but
their citizenship is in heaven. They obey the established laws, and in
their own lives they surpass the laws. They love all men, and are
persecuted by all." --Epistle of Diognetus (3rd Century)
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His
own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called
you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a
people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but
now have obtained mercy. Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and
pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, having
your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against
you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe,
glorify God in the day of visitation. (1 Pet 2:9-12)
For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for
the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body
that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working
by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself. Therefore,
my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in
the Lord, beloved. (Phil 3:20-4:1)
